WEEK 5. ANALYST ROLE #soyer17/18
WEEK 5: TREASURE HUNT AND CARTOGRAPHIC PROJECTIONS
Hi everyone! I am Roberto Jara and this week my role is the analyst.
Before making a reflection about if media are neutral of not I would
like to make a brief summary about how our work has been done this week.
First of all, I think that the best part of the activity was the freedom
to choose the type of presentation we wanted to do because you can do the task
the way you consider best. I have to admit that one of the stars of the week ,
performed really well, in spite of the fact that it was the first for her
talking in front of a big audience.
The worst part was that we did not know very well what we had to do till
Linda explained us in the classroom. It seemed to be very very hard, but
finally, was really funny.
Being honest, the best part of the week is on Monday morning when we
know what is the role we have to develop and presenting ideas before working.
Later, we start doing things.
If you asked me what is the thing I have learnt from this activity I
would dare to say that I am really impressed of what I have learnt. I knew
there was maps, but I did not know the amount of maps there can be and
depending on which of them you use, reality can perceived in one or another
way.
As a group, I think that we are working well. However, we would like to
improve our presentations because our classmates are really good at creating,
and we want to reach such creativity.
Finally, there are a lot of connections related to the topic of the week
with the world. A clear example is how big can be seen a country in a map in
spite of in reality is completely different. It is said that ' the bigger a
country looks, the better people think this country is ' and it is not true. Republic of Congo is huge, and people do not that
really is.
REFLECTION:
In our modern life, we are surrounded by new technologies. Everyday, we
are 'bombed' with commercials, billboards, magazines, radio, television... look
at this, read that, listen to what someone is saying...
Our society is saturated by media and leisure time and the influence and
impact they have in our lives, way of thinking, beliefs and actions is very
subtle because at the end, we become in what we think.
We cannot avoid being surrounded by the media because it is part of our
daily life. While doing daily actions,
we are listening to the radio even though we are not paying attention, watching
TV while having dinner...and what is even worse, sometines we do not know if
what we are listening, reading or watching is biased or not.
People receive different information such as pictures, pieces of news,
commercials.... from different perspectives: is the person who decides if the
information received is accepted or rejected. Unfortunately, this fact only
works with adults. However, children are nor mature and or developed enough to
notice what they hear, they see, and so on is true or not. When they are at school, children are prone to
believe in teachers and consider that everything they say is true, they cannot
imagine a teachers as a liar because children are in the 'other side' of the
media, they are only the mere receptors of information. That is why, in the
case of teachers have to be really aware of the type of media they are using
when they are teaching in a school.
Thus, nobody is immune to the influence of media. Those who think that
they are not affected by the media are really the most affected because they
deny the influence they have on them, therefore, cannot be guarded. Adults
think this way. On the contrary, children are more affected by the media than
we expect. Publicity in all kind of media affects children and teenagers the
most. Commercials showing unreal images such as perfect bodies, flawless skin,
and magic diets are far far away from reality.
As a result, children are hardly
influential by what they say and what they hear. Media are controlled by
people, people who has a purpose and a goal/target directed to someone in
particular or a group. That is the reason why media are not neutral at all.
Please, comment whatever you like or you do not like.
