WEEK 6. TRANSLATOR ROLE #soyer17/18

Hi there, I'm Roberto and this week I am the translator. The following concepts are related to the dark side of books and as you can see, they are related each other.

Lack of motivation: Students who are not engaged to the lessons tend to feel unmotivated because they are not interested in what the teacher is saying. The only use of textbooks makes classes boring and not attractive for children who easily get distracted. As a consequence, teacher feel frustrated and very unmotivated because he cannot show what he is able to do as a teacher, he feels he is not professional enough. As a result, he feels his students are not learning and he ends up with suffering burnout syndrome.

Unprofessional: In this context, it is referred to the feeling or appearance that some teachers show when they only use a textbook as a learning resource. It is said that textbooks, in general, don't allow teacher to be creative and as a result, teacher feel frustrated because he or she cannot show how professional can be because he or she has to do what the book says. According to the national curriculum everything is in the textbooks, and establishes all the steps that teacher has to follow in order to teach and, teacher cannot change this. Consequently, teachers suffer from what is called burnout syndrome.

Burnout Syndrome: Is the syndrome that teachers suffer from because they consider because of external agents they are not performing well in the classroom.
One of the main reasons is the lack of freedom some teachers feel when only have to teach with books as the only source of teaching. They have to follow what is established in textbooks and cannot use alternative resources, even though if they consider the content is not the most appropriate for the students learning. This syndrome affects severely teachers and their quality of performance can be seen highly affected.

Biased: It means that something is declined to one side or another, is not neutral, regarding books, they are influenced by ideological issues. According to those who writes books and their ideologies, beliefs and so on, books will look or have a different perspective or content. If the political party ruling is the right, contents and ideologies will be more conservative, on the other hand, it is said that if the political party is declined to the left, ideologies will be more progressive and oriented to the working class.

Broken Market: It the type of market that because of competition and economic interests makes the price of books is very expensive. Added to this, students cannot choose what to buy, and related to the previous concept, books are biased by the ruling class, or dominant class, as a consequence, the publisher house and publishers get big benefits as well. It can be clearly seen who is the dominant class ruling  by only watching what is printed in books.
